St. Laurent Launches Major Solar Park in Renewable Energy Push

Montreal, November 2nd – In a significant stride toward sustainable energy, St. Laurent Mayor Alan DeSousa has called upon the local business community to collaborate in establishing a large solar park in the borough. Announced at the annual meeting with the Chambre de commerce et d’industrie de Saint-Laurent-Mont-Royal, this initiative marks a major advancement in the borough’s journey towards environmental stewardship and energy independence.

The Vision

Mayor DeSousa underscored the unique landscape of St. Laurent, where 70% of the territory is devoted to professional, retail, manufacturing, and industrial activities. This particular setup makes St. Laurent an ideal candidate for a large-scale solar park initiative, aimed at mitigating the urban heat island effect, a challenge the borough has been actively addressing since 2019.

The Potential

A 2018 study highlighted St. Laurent’s vast potential for solar energy production. It identified about 1,400 industrial and commercial roofs, spanning 4.5 million square meters, as suitable for solar panels – an area equivalent to 850 football fields. The potential energy production from these installations could reach 521 gigawatt-hours annually, enough to power roughly 24,000 households. Montreal’s favorable solar conditions, receiving 25% more sunshine annually than Paris, further amplify the project’s feasibility.

A Collaborative Effort

Mayor DeSousa emphasized collaboration, urging local businesses to invest in solar energy. This initiative aligns with Hydro-Québec’s strategic plan, aiming to boost renewable energy production by 50% by 2050. Initiatives like the Éco-maillage program and the Zone d’innovation en aéronautique exemplify the benefits of cooperative efforts in resource management and cost reduction.
